Registered and Unregistered NDIS Providers

Understand the difference between registered and unregistered NDIS providers and the safeguards to consider.

Choosing an NDIS provider is an important decision. Understanding whether a provider is registered or unregistered can help you decide which option suits your plan, support needs and preferences.

What is a registered NDIS provider?

A registered NDIS provider is approved by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission to deliver particular NDIS supports or services. Registered providers must meet the relevant NDIS Practice Standards and are subject to independent quality audits.

Registration does not mean one provider is automatically the right fit for every person. However, it does mean the provider is subject to additional regulatory requirements and oversight.

What is an unregistered NDIS provider?

An unregistered provider is not registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Many unregistered providers deliver supports to people who self-manage or plan-manage their NDIS funding.

They must still comply with the NDIS Code of Conduct when delivering NDIS supports. You can ask any provider about their experience, policies, worker screening, insurance, complaints process and the safeguards they use.

How your plan management affects your choice

  • NDIA-managed participants: generally need to use registered NDIS providers for funded supports.
  • Plan-managed participants: can usually choose registered or unregistered providers, subject to their plan and the support being purchased.
  • Self-managed participants: can usually choose registered or unregistered providers, subject to their plan and the support being purchased.

If you are unsure how your plan is managed or what it allows, check your plan details or visit the NDIS information about using your plan.

Why some people prefer a registered provider

A registered provider may be a better option for people who need, prefer or are required to use a provider with formal NDIS registration. Registration provides additional safeguards, including:

  • assessment against the NDIS Practice Standards;
  • independent quality audits at intervals set by the Commission;
  • requirements for complaints, incident management, worker screening and risk management processes where relevant;
  • ongoing oversight by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission; and
  • the ability to deliver supports to NDIA-managed participants within the provider’s approved registration groups.

These safeguards can be especially important when considering complex supports. They do not replace the need to ask whether a provider has the right experience, communication approach and current capacity for you.

Questions to ask any provider

  • Are you registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission?
  • Can you work with the way my NDIS plan is managed?
  • What experience do you have with the supports I am seeking?
  • How do you match and support workers?
  • How can I provide feedback or make a complaint?
  • What are your fees, cancellation arrangements and current availability?
