See the Person, Not a Label

Understanding the Person Beyond a Diagnosis

A diagnosis is only one part of a person. It does not tell us everything about their strengths, experiences, goals, preferences or the support that works best for them.

At The Diverse Collective, our complex disability support is person-centred, strengths-based, trauma-informed and guided by recovery principles. We take the time to understand the whole person, including their communication, routines, relationships, choices, strengths and individual support needs.

We recognise that disability, mental health, past experiences, environment and other circumstances can interact in complex ways. Therefore, we focus on understanding the person rather than defining them by a diagnosis or label.

Consistent and Respectful Complex Disability Support

People with complex disability support needs may benefit from consistency, clear communication, thoughtful planning and trusted relationships.

We work alongside each participant to understand what helps them feel safe, supported and in control. With the participant’s consent, we can also work collaboratively with family, Support Coordinators, health professionals and other people in their support network.

Our approach promotes choice, dignity, safety, independence and meaningful participation in everyday life.

We Review Suitability With Care

Understanding Your Needs Before Services Start

Before services begin, we speak openly with you about your support needs, goals, preferences, routines, communication needs and any identified risks.

We also consider whether The Diverse Collective has the right experience, workforce and current capacity to provide the complex disability support you need safely and consistently.

If we believe we can provide suitable support, we will explain the next steps and work with you to prepare for services to begin.

Most importantly, we do not believe in fitting people into a standard model of support. We see the person, not a label, and work to build support around the individual.
