Finding the Right NDIS Provider for You

Choosing a NDIS provider is an important decision. The right provider should understand your needs, respect your choices and provide support in a way that works for you.

You do not have to choose a provider simply because someone recommends them. Therefore, ask questions, compare your options and decide who you feel comfortable working with.

At The Diverse Collective, we believe good support starts by listening to you.

What Should You Look for in an NDIS Provider?

Every person will look for something different in a provider. However, it can help to consider whether the provider:

  • Is registered or not, you can learn more about the important differences here.
  • Listens to you and respects your choices
  • Understands your disability and support needs
  • Has experience providing the type of support you need
  • Involves you in decisions about your supports
  • Communicates in a way that works for you
  • Provides reliable and consistent support
  • Respects your privacy, dignity and independence
  • Has clear processes for feedback and complaints
  • Can explain their services and costs clearly
  • Has suitable availability in your area

Most importantly, you should feel comfortable asking questions and speaking about what is important to you.

Ask About Their Approach to Support

It is also helpful to understand how a provider approaches disability support.

The Diverse Collective provides person-centred, strengths-based and trauma-informed support guided by recovery principles.

This means we recognise your strengths and experiences, respect your choices and work alongside you towards goals that are meaningful to you.

We understand that trust can take time to build. Therefore, we aim to create support relationships based on safety, choice, respect, collaboration and clear communication.

Consider Experience With Your Support Needs

Some people need relatively straightforward assistance with everyday activities. Others may have more complex support needs.

If you have complex needs, ask a potential provider about their experience and whether they have the right workforce and systems to support you safely.

The Diverse Collective has experience supporting people with psychosocial, neurological and intellectual disabilities, complex disability support needs and complex behaviours.

Rather than focusing only on a diagnosis, we consider the whole person, including your strengths, goals, routines, preferences, environment and communication needs.

Ask Questions Before You Decide

Before choosing an NDIS provider, you may want to ask:

  • What experience do you have with people who have support needs like mine?
  • Who will provide my support?
  • Can I have a say in choosing my support workers?
  • How will you learn about my preferences and routines?
  • What happens if my regular support worker is unavailable?
  • How do I provide feedback or make a complaint?
  • What happens if I want to change or stop my services?
  • What are your fees and cancellation arrangements?
  • Do you currently have capacity to provide the support I need?

A good provider should be willing to answer your questions transparently and in a timely manner.

Your Choice and Control Matter

You should be involved in decisions about your supports.

Before services begin, we will speak with you about your needs, goals, preferences, routines and what good support looks like to you.

With your consent, we can also work with your family, nominee, health professionals and other people you choose to involve.

Your voice should remain at the centre of decisions about your support.

Take Your Time

You do not need to make a decision simply because you have made an enquiry or referral.

Speak with potential providers, ask questions and consider whether their approach feels right for you.

If The Diverse Collective does not have the right experience, service or current capacity for your needs, we will be open with you about this and will suggest alternative providers if we are not a good fit for you.
